Spectacle Reef Light stands in the open waters of Lake Huron near the Straits of Mackinac in Cheboygan County, Michigan. Completed in 1874 after four grueling construction seasons, it was considered one of the most difficult engineering feats of its era — built atop a submerged limestone reef in deep, exposed water. The square limestone tower remains an active aid to navigation today. The lighthouse is not open to the public and can only be viewed by boat or aircraft. Late summer offers the best photography conditions, with calm waters and long golden light.
