Round Island Light (St. Mary’s River)

Built in 1892 on Round Island in Michigan’s St. Mary’s River, this historic lighthouse has guided vessels through one of the Great Lakes’ busiest shipping channels for over a century. The red-brick tower remains an active navigational aid, its light still warning freighters navigating the narrow passage.

The lighthouse is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower. However, it makes a striking photography subject — best captured during golden hour from the water or nearby Mackinac Island, where the warm light plays beautifully against the red brick.

Nearby attractions include Mackinac Island’s historic Fort Mackinac, the Grand Hotel, and excellent opportunities for watching large freighters pass through the shipping lanes.
