Passage Island Light

Perched on a remote rocky outcrop at the northeastern tip of Isle Royale, Michigan, Passage Island Light has guided mariners through the treacherous Lake Superior shipping lanes since 1882. This isolated sentinel marks the passage between Isle Royale and the Canadian shore, making it one of the most difficult-to-reach lighthouses in the Great Lakes. The light remains active and automated, though the station is closed to the public — no climbing is permitted. Kayakers and boaters can view it from the water, offering dramatic photo opportunities during golden hour on calm summer evenings (July–August). Nearby, Isle Royale National Park provides outstanding hiking, wildlife watching for moose and wolves, and pristine wilderness camping.
