Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Light

Michigan

About this place

Standing guard over the Keweenaw Waterway since 1874, the Upper Entrance Light marks the Lake Superior approach to the canal connecting Portage Lake to the great lake. Built during the height of the Keweenaw copper boom, this active aid to navigation guided countless ore-laden vessels through treacherous waters. The light remains operational under Coast Guard maintenance, lending historical continuity to a working waterway. The grounds are not open to the public, but the tower photographs beautifully from the water or nearby shoreline. Golden hour on summer evenings offers the best light against Lake Superior backdrops. Visitors to the area can explore the Quincy Mine, McLain State Park, and the historic streets of Hancock and Houghton just minutes away.
