Collins Scenic River

The Collins River cuts through the heart of middle Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, carving a path through limestone bluffs, forested gorges, and some of the most quietly stunning scenery in the state. Fed by cold springs and tributaries from the plateau, the river runs remarkably clear — a quality that draws paddlers, anglers, and swimmers who appreciate water you can actually see through.

Canoeing and kayaking are the main attractions here. The Collins offers stretches suited to beginners with gentle Class I–II rapids, along with calmer pools perfect for floating on a summer afternoon. Smallmouth bass fishing is productive in the deeper runs, and fly anglers will find willing rock bass and sunfish in the shallows. Hiking trails along the river corridor wind through hardwood forests thick with wildflowers in spring — trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells carpet the forest floor from March through May.

Swimming holes tucked beneath sandstone overhangs provide natural relief during Tennessee’s humid summers, which run hot from June through September. Spring and fall are the sweet spot for visiting — mild temperatures, peak color, and comfortable water levels. Winter paddling is possible but expect cold water and solitude.

Camping options in the surrounding area range from developed state park sites to more primitive riverside spots. Come prepared with your own gear and supplies, as services are limited along the river corridor.

The Collins doesn’t announce itself loudly. It rewards those willing to slow down and pay attention — the kind of place that stays with you longer than you expected.
