Tucked along the western shore of Lake Oahe in Sully County, Okobojo Point Recreation Area offers 135 acres of rolling prairie meeting one of the Missouri River’s most impressive reservoirs. The point juts into the lake, giving visitors water views on three sides and a sense of isolation that’s hard to find at busier recreation areas along the Oahe corridor.

Lake Oahe is the draw here. The reservoir stretches over 230 miles and supports excellent walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass fishing — Okobojo Point puts anglers right at the water with easy shoreline access and a boat ramp. Beyond fishing, the lake is popular for boating, kayaking, and swimming during the warm months, though there’s no designated beach, so expect a natural shoreline entry.

The surrounding grasslands make for good wildlife watching. White-tailed deer, pheasants, and various raptors are common, and the open terrain means you’ll often spot them at a distance. Hiking is informal — no marked trail system, but the point itself is compact enough to explore on foot in an afternoon.

Facilities are basic, consistent with South Dakota’s smaller state recreation areas. If camping is available, expect primitive or minimally developed sites rather than full hookups. Come prepared with water and supplies, as services are limited.

The best time to visit is late May through September, when water temperatures are comfortable and fishing peaks. Spring and fall bring fewer visitors and striking prairie light. Winter access may be limited due to road conditions in rural Sully County.
