Farm Island Recreation Area

Sitting on a Missouri River island just east of Pierre, Farm Island Recreation Area offers 1,800 acres of cottonwood bottomlands, prairie grasslands, and river shoreline in Hughes County. The park’s island geography — connected to the mainland by a causeway — gives it a secluded feel despite being minutes from South Dakota’s capital city.

The Missouri River dominates the experience here. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and catfish from the shoreline or boat ramps that provide direct access to Lake Sharpe. A well-maintained trail system winds through mature cottonwood groves and open grasslands, drawing hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers depending on the season. Birdwatchers will find the island productive — bald eagles are common along the river corridor, and migrating waterfowl fill the backwater channels in spring and fall.

The recreation area includes campgrounds with both electric and non-electric sites, many of them shaded by tall cottonwoods and positioned close to the water. Modern restrooms and shower facilities are available during the camping season. A group lodge and picnic shelters make it a practical base for family reunions or group outings.

Late May through September is the prime window, when the campgrounds are fully operational and river fishing peaks. Fall brings fewer crowds, golden cottonwood canopies, and excellent eagle viewing as birds gather along the Missouri before winter sets in.

Farm Island is one of those places that rewards repeat visits — close to town but far enough from pavement to feel like an escape.
