Spring Creek Recreation Area sits along the eastern shores of Lake Sharpe in Hughes County, South Dakota, offering 149 acres of Missouri River reservoir access that draws anglers, boaters, and families looking for a quieter alternative to the busier recreation areas downstream.

The park’s main draw is Lake Sharpe itself — a long, narrow reservoir formed by Big Bend Dam on the Missouri River. Walleye and smallmouth bass fishing here is consistently productive, and the park’s boat ramp provides easy access to some of the best stretches of the reservoir. Shore fishing works well too, particularly along the rocky points near the campground.

On land, the rolling prairie landscape opens up views across the water and surrounding grasslands. Hiking trails wind through native shortgrass prairie where you might spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, or the occasional pronghorn. The park also has a swimming beach, picnic shelters, and a playground — making it a solid base camp for families splitting time between the water and the shore.

Spring Creek’s campground includes both electric and non-electric sites, many with partial shade from cottonwood groves. Sites closer to the water tend to fill first on summer weekends, so arriving by Thursday helps if you’re visiting between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The best window for visiting runs from late May through September, when water temperatures support swimming and the fishing bite is most reliable. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and excellent bird migration viewing along the Missouri River corridor. Winters are harsh and most facilities close by mid-October.
