Sprawling across 71,000 acres in South Dakota’s Black Hills, Custer State Park is one of the largest and most spectacular state parks in the country. Camping options span nine campgrounds, from full-hookup RV sites at Game Lodge to more primitive walk-in sites at French Creek for those seeking solitude. Reservations fill fast — book well ahead for summer visits.

The best time to visit is late May through September, when roads and facilities are fully open. Late September brings the annual Buffalo Roundup, a one-of-a-kind event where cowboys and cowgirls drive the entire herd across the prairie for sorting.
