Sheps Canyon Recreation Area
South Dakota (Fall River County)
Tucked into the rolling prairie of Fall River County, Sheps Canyon Recreation Area sprawls across 6,565 acres along the shores of Angostura Reservoir — one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Black Hills region. Located just southeast of Hot Springs, this state park trades the pine-covered peaks of the northern Hills for wide-open grasslands, red-tinged canyon walls, and calm turquoise waters that feel almost out of place in South Dakota.
Water is the main draw here. Angostura Reservoir stretches roughly seven miles and offers excellent conditions for boating, waterskiing, windsurfing, and swimming from a sandy beach that fills up fast on summer weekends. Walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch keep anglers busy from shore and boat alike, with spring and early fall producing the most reliable bites.
On land, the surrounding grasslands support hiking and wildlife watching — pronghorn, mule deer, and a variety of raptors are common sights. The open terrain makes for striking sunsets, especially from the reservoir overlooks.
Camping options include both modern and primitive sites, many with direct lake access. The modern loops offer electrical hookups, restrooms, and shower facilities, while more secluded spots along the shoreline suit those looking for a quieter stay.
The best window to visit runs from late May through September, when water temperatures climb high enough for comfortable swimming. Weekdays in June and August offer the ideal balance — warm water, fewer crowds, and long evenings on the shore.
