Angostura Recreation Area sits along the shores of Angostura Reservoir in Fall River County, South Dakota, offering 1,125 acres of high-plains water recreation in the state’s warm southwest corner. The reservoir, fed by the Cheyenne River, stretches across a wide valley flanked by rolling grasslands and scattered ponderosa pine — a landscape that feels more like the desert Southwest than the stereotypical Dakotas.

What sets Angostura apart is the water. This is one of the warmest swimming spots in South Dakota, with shallow sandy beaches that heat up quickly under the summer sun. Families spread out along the north shore beach area, where gentle wading gives way to deeper water for swimming.
