Susquehanna Riverlands State Park
Pennsylvania (York County County)
Pennsylvania’s newest state park, Susquehanna Riverlands was established in 2022 along the banks of the Lower Susquehanna River in York County. Spanning 1,100 acres of river bluffs, wetlands, and mature hardwood forest, the park protects one of the most ecologically significant stretches of the Susquehanna — a landscape shaped by centuries of river power and rich in biodiversity.
What makes Susquehanna Riverlands stand out is its position along a major migratory bird flyway. Bald eagles nest along the river corridor, and during spring and fall migrations the skies come alive with raptors, warblers, and waterfowl. Birders will find this park particularly rewarding, especially near the riverfront overlooks.
Hiking trails wind through wooded hillsides and along the water’s edge, offering views of the wide, rocky Susquehanna and the surrounding rolling countryside. Fishing access points let anglers try for smallmouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish. Kayaking and canoeing are popular when river conditions allow, and the park’s trails are well-suited for wildlife photography and nature study.
As a relatively new park, Susquehanna Riverlands is still developing its amenities — camping availability has not yet been confirmed, so check with Pennsylvania DCNR before planning an overnight trip. Facilities are limited but growing.
The best time to visit is spring through early fall, when wildflowers blanket the forest floor and river access is at its peak. Late October brings dramatic foliage along the bluffs. Come early, bring binoculars, and give yourself time to explore — this park rewards patience.
