Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area
Pennsylvania (Dauphin County County)
Tucked into the ridges of Dauphin County, Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area offers 350 acres of forested tranquility just a short drive from Harrisburg. Established in 2000 through a generous land donation by its namesake, this conservation area preserves a striking stretch of Second Mountain’s northern slope, where mature hardwoods blanket steep terrain and seasonal wildflowers carpet the forest floor.
What sets Ibberson apart is its intimate scale and sense of seclusion. Unlike Pennsylvania’s larger, busier state parks, this spot feels genuinely uncrowded. The park’s trail network winds through rich mixed-oak and hickory forest, climbing to rocky overlooks with sweeping views of the Stony Creek Valley below. The Mid State Trail passes directly through the property, making it a worthwhile stop for long-distance hikers or a satisfying day hike on its own.
Birding is particularly rewarding here during spring migration, when warblers and thrushes fill the canopy. Fall brings spectacular foliage across the ridgeline, and winter offers quiet snowshoeing through bare hardwoods. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season.
Camping information is not currently confirmed for this site, so visitors should check with the Pennsylvania DCNR before planning an overnight stay. Day-use facilities include picnic areas and trailhead parking.
The best time to visit is mid-May through late October, when trails are dry and the forest is at its most vibrant. Spring wildflower displays in April and peak fall color in mid-October are especially worth timing a trip around.
