French Creek State Park
Pennsylvania (Berks and Chester Counties County)
French Creek State Park
Spanning 7,339 acres across Berks and Chester Counties, French Creek State Park is one of the largest blocks of contiguous forest in southeastern Pennsylvania. Established in 1946 on land originally acquired during the Great Depression, the park sits on the former site of Hopewell Furnace, an iron-making community that operated from 1771 to 1883—the adjacent Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site makes a worthwhile side trip.
Two lakes anchor the park’s recreation: Hopewell Lake (68 acres) and Scotts Run Lake (22 acres) offer swimming, fishing for bass and panfish, and non-motorized boating. Over 35 miles of trails wind through dense hardwood forest, serving hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The park connects to the Horse-Shoe Trail, a 140-mile route stretching to Valley Forge, making it a popular basecamp for longer treks. Birders appreciate the deep-forest habitat, which supports species like scarlet tanagers and wood thrushes that have become uncommon closer to Philadelphia.
Orienteering is a standout here—French Creek hosts one of only a handful of permanent orienteering courses in the country, with maps available at the park office.
Fall delivers the best visiting conditions, when the hardwood canopy erupts in color and summer crowds thin out. Spring wildflower season runs strong from late April through May. Summer weekends draw families to the lakes, so arrive early for parking.
French Creek sits just 50 miles from Philadelphia, making it an accessible escape without the drive to the Poconos.
