Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Perched on the rugged cliffs of Oregon’s central coast, Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint offers one of the most dramatic ocean vistas along Highway 101. The viewpoint gets its name from the boiler of the steamship J. Marhoffer, which exploded and sank offshore in 1910 — the rusted boiler was visible at low tide for decades.
What makes Boiler Bay exceptional is its front-row seat to the raw power of the Pacific. Massive waves crash against basalt headlands, sending spray dozens of feet into the air during winter storms. The rocky shoreline below creates natural channels where surging water produces spectacular displays year-round.
Visitors come here primarily for whale watching, tidepooling, and photography. Gray whales pass close to shore during their December-through-June migration, and Boiler Bay is considered one of the better spots on the coast to spot them without a boat. The rocky intertidal zone below the viewpoint harbors sea stars, anemones, and urchins at low tide, though reaching the shore requires careful navigation down steep, informal trails.
Storm watching draws dedicated visitors from November through February, when powerful Pacific systems send enormous swells crashing into the headland. Spring and summer bring calmer seas, wildflowers along the bluffs, and clearer skies for photographing the coastline.
The viewpoint is a day-use stop with a small parking area — there are no camping facilities on-site. For overnight stays, nearby Lincoln City and Depoe Bay offer a range of accommodations. No fees or reservations are required to visit.
