Pike Lake State Park
Tucked into the rugged hills of Ross County, Pike Lake State Park covers 600 acres of some of Ohio’s most striking Appalachian foothills terrain. The park sits within the Pike State Forest, giving visitors access to a landscape far more dramatic than most expect from southern Ohio — steep wooded ridges, narrow hollows, and a quiet 13-acre lake that anchors the whole experience.
Pike Lake draws hikers who appreciate solitude over spectacle. The park’s trail system winds through dense hardwood forest and along sandstone outcrops, with several loops ranging from easy lakeside walks to more challenging ridge climbs. Spring wildflower displays here are exceptional, with trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells carpeting the forest floor from mid-April through May.
The lake itself is small but well-suited for fishing (largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish) and non-motorized boating. A swimming beach operates during summer months, and rowboat rentals are typically available.
For overnight stays, Pike Lake offers a mix of options including standard campsites, rent-a-camps, and a handful of housekeeping cabins — the cabins in particular book quickly for fall weekends when the surrounding hardwoods put on a serious color show. The park also features a nature center and seasonal programming.
Visit in mid-October for peak fall foliage, or come in late April when the wildflowers peak and the trails are uncrowded. Pike Lake rewards visitors who slow down and pay attention to the details — this is a place built for quiet mornings and unhurried afternoons.
