Paint Creek State Park stretches across 6,842 acres of rolling hill country in Ross County, Ohio, where the foothills of Appalachia begin to flatten into the broad farmland of the Scioto River valley. At its heart sits Paint Creek Lake, a 1,190-acre reservoir that draws anglers after largemouth bass, saugeye, and channel catfish year-round.

What sets Paint Creek apart is its sheer variety. Hikers can explore over 20 miles of trails that wind through mature hardwood forests and past exposed Devonian-era shale outcroppings — remnants of an ancient seabed. The park’s terrain supports everything from easy lakeside strolls to rugged ridge walks with long views over the valley. Mountain bikers and horseback riders share dedicated trail networks, keeping conflicts to a minimum.

The lake itself is a hub for boating, swimming, and waterskiing, with a public beach and multiple launch ramps. Hunters find productive ground here during deer, turkey, and small game seasons, with designated areas covering thousands of wooded acres.

Spring brings wildflower displays along the forest floor — trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells carpet the hillsides through April and May. Fall color peaks in mid-October, when the mixed oak-hickory canopy turns the ridgelines gold and rust. Summer weekends see the most visitors, but weekday visits reward you with near-solitude on the trails.

Paint Creek sits roughly 60 miles south of Columbus, making it an easy day trip or weekend escape from the city without venturing deep into southeastern Ohio’s more remote parks.
