Lake White State Park
Ohio (Pike County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Pike County, Lake White State Park offers 429 acres of southern Ohio woodland wrapped around its namesake 337-acre lake. The park sits in the unglaciated Appalachian foothills, giving it a rugged, wooded character that sets it apart from Ohio’s flatter northern parks.
The lake is the main draw here. Anglers come for the largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie — the warm, shallow waters make it one of the more productive fishing lakes in the region. A public boat ramp accommodates motorboats (limited to 10 horsepower), and the calm surface is well-suited for kayaking and canoeing. A small swimming beach opens in summer, offering a low-key alternative to the crowded pools at larger state parks.
On land, hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood forest where white-tailed deer and wild turkey are common sights. The terrain is hilly but manageable, with enough elevation change to keep things interesting without being strenuous. Picnic areas with shelters are scattered along the lakeshore, making this a solid day-trip destination for families.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall. May brings wildflowers to the forest floor, summer means warm water and full canopy shade, and October delivers some of the most vivid fall color in southern Ohio.
Lake White is a quieter park — no resort lodges or waterparks — and that’s exactly the point. If you’re after a simple day on the water surrounded by Appalachian hills, this is the place.
