Jacques Cartier State Park
Tucked along the St. Lawrence River in the heart of New York’s Thousand Islands region, Jacques Cartier State Park offers 461 acres of waterfront beauty where the river meets dense northern hardwood forest. Named for the French explorer who navigated these waters in the 1500s, the park sits on the mainland shore with sweeping views of the scattered granite islands that define this stretch of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The park’s real draw is its river access. A public boat launch puts you directly into some of the best freshwater fishing in the Northeast — smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskellunge all patrol these cold, clear channels between the islands. Kayakers and canoeists can island-hop through protected bays, and the sunsets over the water here are genuinely spectacular.
Back on land, wooded trails wind through birch and pine stands, and the park maintains picnic areas with river views that fill up fast on summer weekends. Families gravitate toward the swimming beach when the water warms in July.
Camping is available with sites suited for both tents and RVs, many positioned within earshot of the river. Reserve early for July and August — Thousand Islands season is short and popular.
Visit between late June and early September for the warmest weather and full amenities. Shoulder seasons in May and October bring quieter trails and excellent fall color along the riverbanks, though services may be limited. Bring layers — river breezes keep evenings cool even in midsummer.
