Evangola State Park
New York (Niagara County)
Evangola State Park sits along the shores of Lake Erie in Niagara County, New York, spreading across 733 acres of wooded terrain and waterfront that has drawn visitors since the park’s establishment in 1954. What sets Evangola apart is its natural sand and shale beach — one of the few public Lake Erie beaches in western New York — where the layered sedimentary cliffs create a striking backdrop that feels more like a coastal getaway than an inland park.
The beach is the main draw, with swimming available in designated areas during summer months when lifeguards are on duty. Beyond the shoreline, the park offers hiking trails that wind through mature hardwood forests, open meadows ideal for bird watching, and well-maintained picnic areas with pavilions overlooking the lake. Fishing is productive here, particularly for smallmouth bass and perch along the rocky shoreline. In winter, the trails open up for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and the frozen lakeshore scenery is worth the cold.
The park operates campgrounds with both tent and RV sites, many shaded by old-growth trees and positioned within a short walk of the water. Reservations are recommended for summer weekends, as lakeside spots fill quickly.
The best time to visit is late June through early September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the sunsets over Erie are at their most spectacular — long, golden evenings that linger well past eight o’clock. Bring a camp chair and stay for the show.
