Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve occupies 1,520 acres on Lloyd Neck, a peninsula jutting into Long Island Sound in Suffolk County, New York. Once the private estate of Marshall Field III, the park was established in 1961 and preserves a remarkable landscape where manicured grounds meet wild coastline, mature hardwood forests, and open meadows that feel worlds away from the bustle of nearby New York City.

The preserve is a walker’s paradise. Miles of unpaved roads and trails wind through diverse habitats — salt marshes, freshwater ponds, dense woodlands, and bluffs overlooking the Sound. Birdwatchers come for the migratory species that pass through seasonally, while equestrians share designated trails. Fishing is popular along the rocky shoreline, and the park’s sheltered coves attract kayakers exploring the north shore. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing replace the warm-weather crowds.

The historic buildings scattered across the property — a dairy complex, stables, and the main residence — hint at the estate’s grand past and add architectural interest to any visit. Note that vehicle access ends at the parking area; from there, you walk in, which keeps the interior peaceful and uncrowded.

Camping information is not currently confirmed for this location. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best birding, while summer brings lush greenery and longer daylight hours for exploring the full trail network.
