Spanning 115,000 acres across Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic counties, Wharton State Forest is the largest single tract of land within New Jersey’s state park system — and the heart of the Pine Barrens. Established in 1954, this vast wilderness protects one of the most ecologically unique landscapes on the East Coast, where tea-colored rivers wind through pitch pine and Atlantic white cedar forests.
Wharton is a paddler’s paradise. The Batsto River, Mullica River, and Wading River offer some of the finest canoeing and kayaking in the Mid-Atlantic, with calm currents and stunning scenery that feels worlds away from the Jersey Turnpike. Beyond the water, over 500 miles of unpaved roads and trails invite hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians to explore deep into the Pinelands. The Batona Trail, a 53-mile footpath cutting through the forest, is a bucket-list trek for East Coast backpackers.
History runs deep here too. The restored Batsto Village, an 18th-century iron-making community, offers a fascinating window into New Jersey’s industrial past with its mansion, workers’ cottages, and general store.
Camping options include nine wilderness campgrounds scattered throughout the forest — most accessible only by foot, canoe, or sand road, making for genuinely remote overnight experiences. Spring and fall deliver the best conditions: mild temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and brilliant foliage in October.
Come to Wharton expecting solitude, dark skies, and a landscape that challenges every stereotype about the Garden State.
