Allamuchy Mountain State Park sprawls across 9,092 acres of rugged northwestern New Jersey, spanning Allamuchy, Byram, Green, and Mount Olive Townships in Warren and Sussex Counties. Established in 1966, this expansive state park preserves one of the largest undeveloped tracts in the New Jersey Highlands, offering a genuine escape from the dense suburbia that defines much of the state.
The park divides into two distinct sections. The northern Allamuchy section features dense hardwood forests, rocky ridgelines, and Deer Park Pond, while the southern Stephens section follows the winding Musconetcong River through hemlock-shaded gorges. Over 20 miles of multi-use trails wind through both areas, serving hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The Sussex Branch Trail, a converted rail-trail, cuts through the park and connects to the broader regional trail network, making it a favorite for long-distance riders and runners.
Fishing is excellent along the Musconetcong, a stocked trout stream that draws anglers from across the region each spring. In winter, the rolling terrain becomes popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Hunters use designated areas during deer and small game seasons.
Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwood canopy erupts in color and the trails are dry and cool. Spring brings wildflower displays and prime trout fishing. Summer can be humid, but the forest canopy provides welcome shade.
Come prepared for uneven, rocky terrain and limited signage on some backcountry trails — this park rewards those willing to explore.
