Jenny Jump State Forest sits on a dramatic ridgeline in Hope Township, Warren County, where rocky summits rise abruptly from the surrounding farmland of the Great Valley. Established in 1931, this 4,466-acre state forest takes its name from a colonial-era legend — a girl named Jenny reportedly leaped from the cliffs to escape a pursuing group, giving the ridge its memorable name.
What makes Jenny Jump stand out is its surprising geology. The summit trail leads to exposed rock outcroppings with panoramic views stretching east toward the Kittatinny Ridge and beyond. Ghost Lake, a boulder field left behind by glacial activity, is one of the park’s most distinctive features — massive rocks scattered across a depression that feels otherworldly, especially in morning fog.
The forest offers solid hiking across varied terrain, from easy woodland loops to the more rugged Summit Trail that rewards with those ridgetop views. Birding is productive here given the mix of hardwood forest and rocky habitat. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over the trail system. The park also hosts one of the few public astronomical observatories in New Jersey, operated by the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey — making clear nights here genuinely special.
Spring and fall deliver the best hiking conditions, with October foliage along the ridge being particularly striking. Summer brings humidity but also the fullest canopy cover on shaded trails.
Jenny Jump rewards visitors who appreciate rugged, less-polished landscapes over manicured parkland — it feels wilder than its modest acreage suggests.
