Tucked into the rugged highlands of Rockaway Township in Morris County, Farny State Park sprawls across nearly 4,900 acres of densely wooded terrain that feels remarkably wild for northern New Jersey. Established in 1943, the park protects a stretch of the New Jersey Highlands characterized by rocky ridgelines, hemlock-shaded ravines, and a network of streams feeding into Splitrock Reservoir.
What makes Farny special is its sense of remoteness. Unlike the more manicured state parks closer to the coast, Farny is raw and rugged — a place where hikers can walk for hours on the Four Birds Trail or Split Rock Loop without seeing another person. The trail system connects to the broader Highlands Trail network, making it a favorite among long-distance hikers and trail runners looking for challenging, rocky terrain with rewarding ridgetop views.
Beyond hiking, visitors come for mountain biking on designated trails, seasonal hunting, and bird watching — the park’s mixed hardwood and conifer forests support a strong population of migratory songbirds, particularly warblers in spring. Fishing is available at Splitrock Reservoir along the park’s eastern edge.
Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwood canopy turns brilliant and the summer humidity breaks, though spring wildflower season along the stream corridors is equally compelling. Summer brings lush green canopy and longer daylight for extended hikes.
Expect minimal facilities and no visitor center — Farny rewards self-sufficient explorers who come prepared with a trail map, sturdy boots, and a willingness to get lost in one of North Jersey’s wildest corners.
