Kingston State Park
Tucked into Rockingham County in southeastern New Hampshire, Kingston State Park packs a surprising amount of charm into its 44 acres. The park centers around Great Pond, a spring-fed lake that draws families, swimmers, and picnickers throughout the warm months. It’s the kind of place where a Tuesday afternoon feels like a mini-vacation — close enough to the Seacoast and Greater Boston to reach on a whim, quiet enough to feel like an escape.
The sandy beach is the main attraction, with a gradual slope into the water that makes it ideal for young kids. A roped-off swimming area is staffed by lifeguards during peak season, and the surrounding picnic grove offers shaded tables and charcoal grills steps from the shore. Beyond the beach, a network of short trails loops through mixed hardwood forest, offering easy walks suited for all ages and fitness levels.
Fishing is popular along the pond’s edges, where bass and pickerel keep anglers occupied. Kayaks and canoes are welcome, though motorboats are not — keeping the water calm and the atmosphere peaceful.
Kingston State Park is at its best from late June through early September, when the beach facilities are fully operational and the water is warm enough for swimming. Weekdays tend to be significantly less crowded than weekends, especially in July and August. Arrive early on hot days, as the small parking area fills quickly and the park may close to new arrivals once it reaches capacity.
