Soda Lake Boardwalk offers a unique desert experience in California‘s Carrizo Plain, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The 816-foot recycled-plastic boardwalk traverses the edge of one of the largest remaining natural alkali flats in the state, providing accessible hiking and exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

The interpretive trail introduces visitors to the harsh yet beautiful ecosystem surrounding the dry lakebed. During summer months, white dust devils spin across the alkaline playa, while winter and spring bring migratory birds and potential water to the normally dry lake. Photographers will find compelling subjects in the stark landscape and spinning dust columns.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout Carrizo Plain National Monument, making this an excellent base for multi-day exploration. No developed campgrounds exist at the boardwalk itself, so visitors should arrive self-sufficient with water and supplies. Access is via unpaved roads that can become impassable when wet.

Best visiting seasons are late winter through spring when wildflower blooms may carpet surrounding grasslands, and fall for comfortable temperatures and clear desert light.
