West Shore State Park

Tucked along the western shore of Flathead Lake in Lake County, West Shore State Park offers 129 acres of rocky beach, old-growth ponderosa pine, and some of the clearest freshwater views in the Northern Rockies. Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, and this park puts you right at the water’s edge without the crowds of nearby Wayfarers or Big Arm.

The shoreline here is the main draw — smooth cobblestones give way to impossibly blue water backed by the Mission Mountains to the east. Swimming is excellent in late July and August when surface temperatures climb into the low 70s. Bring water shoes; the rocky bottom is beautiful but unforgiving on bare feet.

Hiking trails wind through stands of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine, with wildflowers peaking in June. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for osprey and bald eagles fishing the lake, particularly in the morning hours. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular from the park’s easy shoreline access, and anglers target lake trout and yellow perch.

The best time to visit is late June through September, when warm days and long evenings make the most of the lakeside setting. Shoulder season visitors in May or October will find solitude and dramatic light over the water, though temperatures drop quickly after sundown.

Whether you’re passing through on US-93 or building a day around Flathead Lake, West Shore rewards a stop with scenery that punches well above its modest acreage.
