Somers Beach State Park
Montana (Flathead County)
Somers Beach State Park sits on the northwestern shore of Flathead Lake in Flathead County, Montana, offering 106 acres of lakefront access against one of the most stunning backdrops in the northern Rockies. Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, and Somers Beach provides one of the best public entry points to its clear, glacier-fed waters.
The park’s main draw is its broad gravel beach stretching along the lake’s edge, where visitors can wade, swim, and launch kayaks or paddleboards directly into the water. The shoreline faces south across the lake toward the Mission Mountains, making it an exceptional spot for watching sunsets paint the peaks in alpenglow. Birdwatchers will find osprey, bald eagles, and great blue herons frequenting the shoreline, particularly near the wetland areas that border the park’s eastern edge.
Beyond the beach, the park includes open grasslands and scattered groves of ponderosa pine that are pleasant for picnicking and casual walks. Anglers can cast for lake trout, yellow perch, and whitefish from shore, though a boat opens up far more of Flathead Lake’s productive waters.
The best time to visit is late June through early September, when lake temperatures are warmest for swimming and the long summer days make the most of the setting. Spring and fall bring quieter conditions and excellent wildlife viewing, though the water turns bracingly cold.
Somers Beach is a day-use park — plan overnight stays at nearby Wayfarers or Finley Point state parks along the lake.
