Vaughan Woods State Park
Maine (York County)
Vaughan Woods State Park sits along the banks of the Salmon Falls River in southern Maine’s York County, offering 165 acres of old-growth forest that feels remarkably untouched for a park so close to the coast. Towering white pines and hemlocks — some over 150 feet tall — create a cathedral-like canopy that sets this park apart from other state lands in the region.
The park’s trail system follows the river bluff through stands of ancient trees, with the main River Trail providing an easy, scenic loop that works well for families and casual hikers alike. Birdwatchers will find the mixed forest habitat productive, particularly during spring and fall migration when warblers move through the canopy. The riverbank sections offer quiet spots to sit and watch the water, and the forest floor erupts with wildflowers in late spring.
This is a day-use park — there are no camping facilities on-site — so plan accordingly if you’re building an overnight itinerary in the area. The town of South Berwick is minutes away and offers dining and lodging options.
The best time to visit is May through October, with fall foliage in late September and early October being especially striking against the dark evergreen backdrop. Summer weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends. Winter access is limited but snowshoeing is possible when conditions allow.
Come for the old-growth trees and stay for the riverside trails. Vaughan Woods delivers a peaceful forest experience without requiring a long drive into Maine’s interior.
