Van Meter State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Saline County, Van Meter State Park preserves 1,104 acres of Missouri River bluffs, dense hardwood forest, and one of the state’s most significant archaeological sites. The park sits on land once home to the Missouri Indians, and the Old Fort — an earthwork structure believed to date back centuries — remains a compelling draw for history-minded visitors.

Trails wind through upland woods and bottomland, offering a mix of easy loops and moderate ridge hikes with views over the surrounding farmland. The 1.5-mile Indian Trail passes through the heart of the archaeological area, while longer routes push into quieter stretches of oak-hickory forest where white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and pileated woodpeckers are common sights.

The park’s campground offers both basic and electric sites shaded by mature hardwoods — a solid option for a weekend base camp without the crowds you’d find at Lake of the Ozarks. A small lake provides bank fishing for bass and bluegill, and picnic shelters scattered throughout the park make for easy day-trip setups.

Spring wildflower season (late April through May) is arguably the best time to visit, when redbuds and dogwoods light up the understory. Fall color peaks in mid-October and draws fewer visitors than nearby state parks. Summers can be humid, so morning hikes are your best bet.
