Seneca Creek State Park
Maryland (Montgomery County)
Seneca Creek State Park stretches across 6,391 acres of Montgomery County, Maryland, following the winding path of Seneca Creek from the Piedmont plateau down to the Potomac River. What sets this park apart is its surprising wildness so close to the Washington, D.C. metro area — dense hardwood forests, rocky creek beds, and a 90-acre lake that feels miles from the nearest suburb.
Clopper Lake anchors the park’s recreation. In warmer months, visitors can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards from the boathouse, or fish for largemouth bass and bluegill from the shoreline. A disc golf course winds through the woods nearby, and the network of multi-use trails — over 20 miles in total — draws hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners year-round. The Greenway Trail, following the creek corridor, is a standout for its creek crossings and old-growth stretches.
Families will find a lot to work with here: picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and a tire playground that kids gravitate toward. Birders should bring binoculars — the creek corridor is a reliable spot for warblers during spring migration and great blue herons throughout the year.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, with wildflower blooms in April and rich foliage color in October. Summer brings swimmers and paddlers to the lake, though weekends can get busy.
Note that camping availability at Seneca Creek is limited — check with Maryland DNR for current options and group reservations. Day-use access is the primary draw here, and it delivers.
