Rock Springs Run State Reserve

Tucked into the rolling sandhills of Lake County near Sorrento, Rock Springs Run State Reserve protects over 14,000 acres of some of Central Florida’s most pristine natural landscape. Established in 1983, the reserve safeguards the spring-fed Rock Springs Run as it winds through longleaf pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, and hydric hammock before feeding into the Wekiva River system — one of only two federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida.

The star attraction here is the water. Paddlers can launch a roughly 8.5-mile canoe or kayak run down Rock Springs Run, a narrow, crystal-clear stream shaded by a dense canopy of oaks and palms. The current does most of the work, making it accessible for beginners while still feeling genuinely remote. Keep your eyes open for otters, wading birds, gopher tortoises, and the occasional black bear.

On land, the reserve offers miles of multi-use trails popular with hikers and equestrians. The terrain is surprisingly hilly for Florida, with well-drained sandy ridges that stay passable even after rain. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons, so check the schedule before planning a visit.
