Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park spans over 17,400 acres along the boundary of Seminole and Lake counties near Sanford, Florida. Established in 1976, this preserve protects one of Central Florida’s most ecologically significant river corridors — the lower stretch of the Wekiva River as it winds toward the St. Johns River.

What sets this park apart is its sheer wildness. Unlike the more developed Wekiva Springs State Park upstream, Lower Wekiva feels remote and unhurried. The landscape shifts between sandhill, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hydric hammock, creating habitat for black bears, gopher tortoises, and an impressive variety of wading birds. The Wekiva River itself is a designated Wild and Scenic River, and paddling its tannic, spring-fed waters through dense canopy is the park’s signature experience.

Hiking and horseback riding trails wind through miles of flatwoods and sand pine scrub, offering solitude that’s increasingly rare this close to Orlando’s sprawl. Fishing along the river draws regulars targeting bass and panfish. Birdwatchers will find the wetland edges especially productive during winter migrations.

Camping availability is not confirmed — check with the park directly before planning an overnight trip, as facilities here are more limited than neighboring state parks.

The best time to visit is November through March, when temperatures are comfortable, humidity drops, and mosquito pressure eases considerably. Summer visits are doable but bring serious bug spray and plenty of water.
