Sprawling across nearly 39,000 acres in Franklin and Jefferson Counties, Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is one of the largest public recreation areas in Illinois. Built around the 18,900-acre Rend Lake reservoir, this wildlife area near Bonnie offers a striking mix of open water, hardwood timber, and rolling grasslands that feels worlds away from the flat farmland surrounding it.
Fishing is the main draw here. Rend Lake consistently ranks among the top bass fishing lakes in the Midwest, producing largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish that keep anglers coming back season after season. Bank fishing access is plentiful, and several boat ramps make it easy to get out on the water early.
Beyond fishing, the area supports excellent hunting for deer, turkey, dove, and waterfowl across its managed fields and timber tracts. Hikers and birders will find miles of trails winding through bottomland forests where great blue herons, bald eagles, and migrating warblers are regular sights. The lake’s quiet coves are ideal for kayaking and canoeing.
Fall is arguably the best season to visit, when the hardwoods turn and hunting seasons overlap with some of the year’s best fishing. Spring brings wildflowers and active bird migration. Summers can be hot and humid, but early mornings on the lake are hard to beat.
With a solid 4.1-star rating from visitors, Rend Lake rewards those willing to explore its vast, uncrowded landscape — a genuine Southern Illinois gem.
