Ralph Stover State Park
Pennsylvania (Bucks County County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Bucks County, Ralph Stover State Park packs a remarkable amount of natural beauty into its compact 45 acres. Established in 1931, this intimate park centers around Tohickon Creek and the dramatic High Rocks cliff face — a 200-foot sheer rock wall that draws rock climbers from across the Mid-Atlantic and offers non-climbers some of the most striking overlook views in eastern Pennsylvania.
Tohickon Creek serves as the park’s other main attraction. During scheduled water releases from Lake Nockamixon upstream (typically spring and fall weekends), the creek transforms into one of the region’s premier whitewater kayaking and canoeing runs, with Class II and III rapids that challenge experienced paddlers. When the water is calm, the creek corridor makes for peaceful fishing and wading.
Hikers will find well-maintained trails winding through hemlock-shaded ravines and hardwood forests, with the High Rocks Trail offering the park’s signature payoff — panoramic views of the creek gorge below. The terrain is surprisingly rugged for a park this size, so sturdy footwear is worthwhile.
Spring brings the best whitewater conditions and wildflower displays, while fall transforms the creek gorge into a corridor of fiery color. Summer is ideal for a shaded creekside escape from Philadelphia’s heat, just over an hour’s drive away.
While Ralph Stover itself doesn’t offer campground facilities, adjacent Tohickon Valley Park (managed by Bucks County) provides campsites nearby, making overnight trips easy to plan. This is a park where small acreage belies big experiences.
