High Rocks State Park
Pennsylvania (Bucks County County)
High Rocks State Park
Perched above the steep gorge of Tohickon Creek in Bucks County, High Rocks offers some of the most dramatic cliff-top scenery in eastern Pennsylvania. The park’s namesake formation — a series of sheer rock outcroppings rising roughly 200 feet above the creek — draws rock climbers, rappellers, and hikers looking for views that feel far removed from the surrounding suburbs.
The main overlook is a short walk from the parking area, making it accessible even for casual visitors. From the rim, you can watch climbers work the cliff face below while taking in a sweeping view of the forested Tohickon Valley. Several trails wind through the surrounding woods and connect to neighboring Ralph Stover State Park, where additional hiking, picnicking, and creek access await.
Tohickon Creek itself is a major draw. During scheduled dam releases in spring and fall, it transforms into one of the region’s best whitewater kayaking and canoeing runs — a Class II-III stretch that pulls paddlers from across the mid-Atlantic. Outside release weekends, the creek is a quieter spot for fishing and wading.
Spring brings wildflowers and reliable water levels, while fall delivers peak foliage that’s especially striking from the overlook. Summer can be hot and buggy along the creek, but the shaded trails stay comfortable.
High Rocks is a day-use area, so plan accordingly if you need overnight accommodations. For a compact park, it packs a remarkable amount of adventure into a small footprint.
