Point Sal State Beach
Guadalupe, California (Santa Barbara County)
Point Sal State Beach sits at the end of a rugged, unpaved road in Guadalupe, tucked into a remote stretch of Santa Barbara County coastline that most visitors never find. That remoteness is exactly what makes it worth the effort. Spanning 84 acres, this state beach offers one of the last truly undeveloped coastal experiences in Southern California — no concession stands, no lifeguard towers, no crowds.
The beach occupies a dramatic cove beneath steep, wind-carved bluffs that drop sharply to the sand. Tidepools along the rocky edges teem with sea anemones, hermit crabs, and the occasional starfish. The surrounding headlands provide excellent vantage points for spotting migrating gray whales between December and April, and resident harbor seals haul out on the rocks year-round.
Hiking is the primary draw here. The Point Sal Trail descends roughly two miles from the trailhead to the beach, with sweeping views of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes and the open Pacific. Beachcombing, wildlife photography, surf fishing, and simply sitting in solitude round out the activity list. Swimming is possible but not recommended — the water is cold, currents are strong, and there’s no lifeguard presence.
No camping facilities exist at the beach itself, though the nearby Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes offer backcountry options worth exploring.
Visit between late spring and early fall for the mildest weather, though morning fog is common even in summer. Bring layers, water, and sturdy footwear for the trail — and be prepared for a beach that rewards those willing to earn it.
