Pocomoke River State Park stretches across 916 acres of Worcester County on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore, where the Pocomoke River — one of the darkest, most tannic waterways on the East Coast — winds through ancient stands of bald cypress and loblolly pine. The park is split between two areas: Shad Landing on the south bank and Milburn Landing to the north, each offering a distinct character and access point to the river.

Paddling is the main draw here. The Pocomoke’s dark, mirror-still water reflects the cypress canopy overhead, creating an almost swamp-like atmosphere rare this far north. Canoe and kayak rentals are typically available at Shad Landing, making it easy to get on the water without hauling your own gear. Beyond paddling, the park offers hiking trails through bottomland forest, fishing for largemouth bass and chain pickerel, and a swimming pool at Shad Landing for cooling off in summer.

Both areas of the park feature campgrounds with electric hookups and hot showers, and Shad Landing includes a handful of camper cabins for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites are shaded and well-spaced, tucked among the pines.

Late spring through early fall is the best window for visiting — the cypress trees are fully leafed out, the river is warm enough for paddling, and the birding is excellent, with bald eagles, great blue herons, and barred owls regularly spotted along the water. Mosquitoes can be fierce in midsummer, so pack repellent and plan morning outings.
