Oscar Scherer State Park sits along South Creek in Osprey, just minutes south of downtown Sarasota, making it one of the most accessible wild spaces on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Established in 1956 and spanning 1,400 acres, the park protects one of the last remaining scrubby flatwoods habitats in the region — and with it, a resident population of Florida scrub-jays, a threatened species found nowhere else on Earth outside Florida.

The park’s trail network covers 15 miles through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and along the tidal waters of South Creek. Kayaking and canoeing the creek is a highlight — the water trail winds through mangrove-lined corridors where you’re likely to spot great blue herons, ospreys, and the occasional manatee during cooler months. Oscar Scherer offers full-facility camping with 104 sites, including water and electric hookups, making it a solid base for exploring Sarasota County. Sites are shaded by mature pines and fill quickly during winter season — reserve well ahead for December through March stays.

The best time to visit is November through April, when humidity drops, mosquitoes thin out, and migratory birds fill the canopy. Summer visits are doable but prepare for afternoon thunderstorms and serious insect pressure.
