Old Mill State Park sits along the Middle River in Marshall County, Minnesota, preserving 287 acres of rolling prairie and woodland where northwestern Minnesota’s agricultural heritage comes alive. The park’s centerpiece is a restored steam-powered flour mill originally built by Swedish immigrant John Larson in the 1880s — one of the few operational grinding mills left in the state. During summer weekends, rangers fire up the mill for demonstrations, letting visitors watch wheat transform into flour the way settlers once depended on.

The landscape here straddles two ecosystems. Prairie wildflowers blanket the open grasslands from June through August, while the river corridor supports dense stands of elm, ash, and oak.
