Newton Hills State Park rises from the prairie of Lincoln County, South Dakota, as a surprising pocket of dense hardwood forest — one of the few places in the state where towering bur oaks, basswoods, and ironwoods blanket the landscape. Spread across 948 acres along the bluffs of the Big Sioux River valley, the park feels like a slice of the eastern woodlands dropped into the Great Plains.

The forested ravines and ridgelines offer some of the best hiking in southeast South Dakota. Over 10 miles of trails wind through the timber, ranging from easy loops to steeper climbs that reward you with views across the Sioux River valley. In winter, these same trails become popular cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes. Horseback riding is available on designated trails, and mountain bikers will find terrain here that’s uncommon for this part of the state.

Wildlife is abundant — white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and red foxes are regular sightings, and birders can spot species more typical of Minnesota’s forests than South Dakota’s grasslands.

The park offers both modern and primitive campsites, along with heated camping cabins for those who want the woods without the full roughing-it experience. A horse camp serves equestrian visitors.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwoods put on a vivid color display that draws visitors from Sioux Falls, just 30 miles north. Spring wildflower season runs a close second. Summer weekends fill up fast, so book campsites early.
