Big Sioux Recreation Area

Tucked along the banks of the Big Sioux River in Minnehaha County, this 430-acre state park offers one of eastern South Dakota’s best escapes from the nearby bustle of Sioux Falls. The river is the real draw here — it carves through wooded bluffs and open prairie, creating a landscape that feels surprisingly rugged for this corner of the state.

The Big Sioux River itself provides solid opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, particularly in spring and early summer when water levels are up.
