Mount Tom State Park

Rising above the rolling hills of Litchfield County, Mount Tom State Park packs a remarkable amount into its 231 acres. The park’s centerpiece is the stone observation tower at the 1,325-foot summit, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. On clear days, the tower delivers sweeping views across the Litchfield Hills and into neighboring New York — one of the best panoramas in western Connecticut.

The hike to the summit follows a moderately steep, mile-long trail through mixed hardwood forest. It’s short enough for families but rewarding enough to feel like a proper outing. A second, more gradual trail loops around the back of the mountain for those who prefer an easier grade.

At the base of the mountain, Mount Tom Pond offers a sandy swimming beach staffed with lifeguards during summer months, making this one of the few Connecticut state parks where you can hike a mountain and cool off in a lake on the same visit. Picnic areas with grills are scattered along the shoreline, and fishing is permitted in the pond.

Fall foliage season — typically mid-October in Litchfield County — transforms the summit hike into one of the region’s standout leaf-peeping experiences. Summer weekends draw swimmers and families, while spring and winter see lighter crowds on the trails.

Located just outside the charming village of Washington Depot, Mount Tom pairs well with a trip to the area’s antique shops and local restaurants. No camping facilities are available within the park.
