Moreau Lake State Park
New York (Saratoga/Capital District County)
Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, Moreau Lake State Park offers a compelling mix of lakeside relaxation and rugged trail hiking across its 4,531 acres in New York’s Saratoga/Capital District region. Established in 1967, the park has grown into one of the most versatile outdoor destinations in the eastern part of the state.
The centerpiece is Moreau Lake itself — a clean, spring-fed lake with a sandy beach that draws swimmers and sunbathers from late June through Labor Day. Kayakers and canoeists share the calm water (no motorboats allowed), making it an ideal spot for a quiet paddle. In winter, the lake freezes solid enough for ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
The trail system is the park’s hidden strength. Over 40 miles of interconnected paths wind through hardwood forests, along rocky ridgelines, and up to overlooks with views of the Hudson River valley. The Western Ridge Trail rewards hikers with panoramic vistas that rival anything in the southern Adirondacks. Mountain biking is permitted on many trails, and the terrain ranges from beginner-friendly loops to technical singletrack.
The campground offers both tent and RV sites tucked among mature pines, with hot showers and a camp store nearby. Reservations fill quickly for summer weekends, so book early through Reserve America.
Visit in early October for peak fall foliage without the Adirondack crowds, or come midsummer for the full beach-and-trails experience. Moreau Lake consistently delivers more wilderness feel than its proximity to Saratoga Springs would suggest.
