Mohawk State Forest &038; Mohawk Mountain State Park sprawls across 4,016 acres of rugged, wooded terrain in West Cornwall, tucked into the hills of Litchfield County. The centerpiece is Mohawk Mountain itself, home to Connecticut’s oldest and most popular ski area. In winter, Mohawk Mountain Ski Area draws skiers and snowboarders to its 26 trails and 650-foot vertical drop — modest by New England standards, but perfectly suited for families and day-trippers from Hartford or New York. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails wind through the surrounding forest when conditions allow.

The rest of the year belongs to hikers. The Mohawk Trail climbs to a stone lookout tower at 1,683 feet, delivering panoramic views of the Housatonic River valley and the Berkshire foothills. The Mattatuck Trail also passes through, connecting to Connecticut’s broader Blue-Blazed trail system. Spring brings mountain laurel blooms (Connecticut’s state flower) that blanket the understory in June, while fall foliage here ranks among the best in the state — peak color typically arrives in mid-October.

Fishing is available along several streams, and birders will find the mixed forest habitat productive year-round. Note that camping facilities are limited, so check with the Connecticut DEEP for current availability before planning an overnight trip.
