Mayer State Park
Oregon (Portland/Columbia Gorge County)
Mayer State Park sits along the Columbia River in the eastern reaches of the Columbia River Gorge, where the lush forests of western Oregon give way to golden grasslands and dramatic basalt cliffs. This transition zone creates some of the most striking scenery in the Gorge, with sweeping views of the river, Mount Hood, and the layered bluffs that define this stretch of the corridor.
The park is a favorite among windsurfers and kiteboarders, thanks to the reliable winds that funnel through the Gorge each summer. A sandy swim beach offers a calmer spot for families to cool off, and the adjacent boat ramp provides easy access to the Columbia for fishing and paddling. On shore, picnic areas are shaded by mature trees — a welcome refuge on hot summer afternoons.
What sets Mayer apart is its proximity to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint and the Tom McCall Point Trail, one of the Gorge’s best wildflower hikes. In spring, the Rowena Plateau erupts with balsamroot, lupine, and paintbrush against a backdrop of the river far below. The famous Rowena Loops — a series of switchbacks carved into the hillside along the Historic Columbia River Highway — make the drive in half the experience.
Visit from May through September for the best weather and wind conditions. Spring is ideal for wildflowers, while summer draws the river sports crowd. The park offers day-use facilities but no overnight camping, so plan accordingly for longer stays in the Gorge.
