Laurel Caverns State Park
Pennsylvania (Fayette County County)
Laurel Caverns State Park sits atop Chestnut Ridge in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, protecting the largest cave system in the state. Designated as a state park in 2025, this underground wonder offers visitors something genuinely different from the typical Pennsylvania park experience — a chance to explore a limestone cavern that stretches more than three miles beneath the Laurel Highlands.
The cave itself is the main draw. Guided tours lead visitors through illuminated passages lined with formations shaped over millions of years, while more adventurous explorers can opt for spelunking trips that venture deeper into undeveloped sections. Above ground, the park’s location on Chestnut Ridge provides forested trails and sweeping views of the surrounding highlands.
Beyond caving, the property supports hiking and nature study through the mixed hardwood forest that blankets the ridgetop. The geology here is fascinating even at the surface — sinkholes and karst features dot the landscape, hinting at the hollow world below. Birding is productive along the ridge, particularly during spring and fall migration when raptors ride the thermals.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when surface trails are at their most inviting. The cave, however, maintains a constant cool temperature year-round, making it a welcome escape on hot summer days and a surprisingly comfortable destination even in shoulder seasons.
As a newer state park, facilities and programming are still developing. Check with the Pennsylvania DCNR for current visitor information, trail maps, and tour availability before planning your trip.
