Lake Waccamaw State Park sits along the shores of one of North Carolina’s most remarkable natural features — Lake Waccamaw, a Carolina bay lake that stretches across 8,938 acres of dark, tea-colored water in the Coastal Plain. Established in 1976, the park’s 2,398 acres protect a geological curiosity found nowhere else on Earth: the lake’s limestone bluffs neutralize the normally acidic bay waters, creating unique conditions that support several fish and mollusk species found only here.

The park offers a network of trails winding through pine flatwoods, pocosins, and cypress-tupelo swamps along the lake’s northern shore. The Lake Trail boardwalk extends over the water and through dense swamp forest, giving visitors an up-close look at bald cypress draped in Spanish moss. Birding is exceptional, particularly during spring and fall migrations when warblers, herons, and osprey frequent the shoreline. Kayaking and canoeing on the lake provide a peaceful way to explore its vast, shallow waters — bring your own boat, as rentals aren’t available on-site.

Fishing draws steady visitors year-round, with largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish populating the lake. Picnic shelters and a group camping area round out the amenities, though individual campsite availability should be confirmed with the park directly.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for hiking and paddling, with mild temperatures and fewer insects. Summer brings heat and humidity typical of eastern North Carolina, but the lake makes it worthwhile. Visit midweek if you prefer solitude along the trails.
