Jones Lake State Park
Tucked into the sandy lowlands of North Carolina’s Coastal Plain, Jones Lake State Park protects 1,669 acres surrounding one of the state’s rarest natural features — a Carolina bay lake. Jones Lake itself is a shallow, oval-shaped lake with tea-colored water stained by natural tannins from surrounding vegetation, giving it a striking amber hue unlike typical lakes. Established in 1939, the park holds the distinction of being one of the few places where visitors can experience these geologically mysterious formations up close.
The lake’s calm, shallow waters make it ideal for swimming at the designated beach area, canoeing, and kayaking. A bathhouse provides convenient changing facilities during summer months. Anglers can try their luck with largemouth bass and other warm-water species, though the acidic water keeps fish populations modest. Several hiking trails wind through longleaf pine and pond pine forests, including the Bay Trail, which loops around the lake and offers glimpses of carnivorous plants like Venus flytraps and sundews thriving in the boggy margins.
Spring and early fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for exploring, with mild temperatures and fewer insects than the humid summer months. Summer remains popular for swimming, though expect biting flies near the water’s edge.
The park’s relatively uncrowded atmosphere sets it apart from busier North Carolina destinations — this is a place for quiet paddling, unhurried walks, and appreciating a landscape shaped by forces geologists still debate. Visitors should bring water and snacks, as amenities are limited.
